
Furthermore, it is impossible fully to appreciate a scholar's ideas without some understanding of the intellectual atmosphere within which, and in reaction to which, those ideas were evolved so that one needs to learn something about past theories if only, in some cases, to see why they were wrong In many cases one school has directed its attention to issues which simply have not been considered by another school, so that one can gain by studying other orthodoxies without necessarily rejecting any elements of one's own. This is not only because some of the ideas he has been taught as received truth are likely to be wrong (although I do believe that there are fundamental errors in the thinking of the most fashionable contemporary linguistic school, and I hope this book may encourage questioning of those points). It cannot fail to be an advantage to any student of linguistics (whether he is a 'student' in the formal or the amateur sense) to learn something of the ideas that have been current in traditions other than the one with which he is most familiar. Often one individual or a small group of original minds has founded a tradition which has continued to mould approaches to language in the university or the nation in which that tradition began between adherents of different traditions there has usually been relatively limited contact.

The first such report was issued in January 2014. In addition to the entries for individual programs/departments, the LSA produces an annual report on the " State of Linguistics in Higher Education," based on the data provided within the directory. When editing program data, be sure to save your changes in each section of the directory. From your profile page, you cann access your department's profile from the 'My Programs' tab. To access your departmental profile, you must first be logged in with your account. Once approved, this individual will have the right to edit program data. (Please note: if you do not see the name of your institution listed, please contact the LSA Secretariat to have it added.) Near the bottom of the listing, click on the field that says "Register as a departmental contact." An automated e-mail with your request will be sent to the LSA Secretariat. To register, locate the listing for your program or department below and open it to view the current information. Within each directory listing, programs and departments may provide data on: the types of program specializations offered the number of undergraduate and graduate student enrollees degrees awarded number and type of faculty along with demographic data on gender and ethnicity for both students and faculty.Įach linguistics program/department is asked to register an official departmental contact with the LSA Secretariat. Users may search the directory using the four query fields found below, or browse the programs at institutions organized by alphabetical order.
